Another rare find!! The tree that produced this mantel grew in southern Texas.
This is an Osage Orange hardwood. Native Americans highly valued the Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) for its firm, durable wood, using it to craft prized bows, war clubs, and tomahawk handles, while its bark provided fiber for rope and tannin for leather, and root tea was used for sore eyes; its wood also yielded a vibrant yellow dye, making it a significant trade item, often exchanged for horses and blankets.
This mantel measures in at 6 feet 6 inches wide x 3 inches tall x 17 inches at its widest (front to back).
